The Buzz: Where Is the ‘Us’ in Inclusion?

As advocates for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), we are fighting battles on many fronts: EDI fatigue in organisations, concerted efforts to limit EDI work in some spheres, lack of resources—you name it! Today I want to talk about an internal issue, relevant to us EDI practitioners, advocates and experts: the lack of an “us” in EDI.

The Buzz: The [Black] Dolls Are in Town

The Addy Walker doll and the Black Barbie were staples in my childhood. They were proof that I, a Black girl, was special, worthy, and beautiful. In a world that tells Black girls and women, we aren’t good enough, Addy defied mainstream claims. It warms my heart that over time dolls with dark brown skin, coily and kinky hair, full lips, and deep brown eyes have made their mark on the shelves of hundreds of stores and also online.

The Buzz: Making the Case for White DEIJ Leadership

Recently, the University of Florida announced the elimination of its Chief Diversity Officer and the entire office of program and support staff. The targeting of the likes of Dr. Marsha McGriff (former CDO at UF) is enabled by those who point to successful and educated Black women in positions of power as having “unfairly benefited” from affirmative action. Such erroneous claims would fall flat in the first instance if white folks took initiative in leading DEIJ change in their organizations.

The Buzz: What Your Trans Coworkers Wish You Knew

As transgender people we are not a monolith, our experiences in the workplace are varied, and I can’t speak for all transgender people. The Buzz: The ‘Reality’ of Reproductive Health on TV

While there are still no cures for fibroids, PCOS, or endometriosis, the fact that we are having the conversations publicly gives me hope that research will get funded and that partners and families will be understanding. Organizations pursuing racial justice must engage in a process wherein they identify the injury (the root causes of injustice), develop and implement a treatment plan (address the root causes while grappling with the discomfort and pain), and then provide the time and resources for healing to happen (respect and honor the needs of those impacted by injustices in your workplace).

The Buzz: A Nightmare on “Equity” Street: 5 of the Scariest Things Happening to DEIJ in the Workplace

I want you to know this: you are not a monster, goblin, or ghoul, and DEIJ work is nothing to be fearful of. You may have to regroup, shift gears, take a break, ask for help, or even reevaluate how you are working (or whom you work with and for), but let this be an acknowledgment that you are no ghost. We see you and we will see you thrive way past that final scroll of the credits.

The Buzz: 10 Reasons Why I am Proud to be Woke

I literally woke up at 5 AM thinking that we don’t talk enough about what “woke” really means. We are allowing the MAGA extremists to mischaracterize and malign the very essence of not only the meaning but what woke looks like in action. Here are 10 reasons why we all should be proud to be woke and strive to become even more woke.
