The Addy Walker doll and the Black Barbie were staples in my childhood. They were proof that I, a Black girl, was special, worthy, and beautiful. In a world that tells Black girls and women, we aren’t good enough, Addy defied mainstream claims. It warms my heart that over time dolls with dark brown skin, coily and kinky hair, full lips, and deep brown eyes have made their mark on the shelves of hundreds of stores and also online.

I beam with joy every time I see Black self-published or hybrid-published authors because we are able to control our narrative. Gone are the days of waiting for outside validation, we validate ourselves. Our voices, perspectives and stories make the world go around. We are Black — unapologetically.

Just because I was part of a Black organization, it didn’t mean that it was immune to the infiltration of white supremacy culture. I understand capitalism and white supremacy are intertwined, and it can be difficult to run an organization to survive in this climate. All we can do is be aware of how we show up and how it aligns with our values.

By and large, racial diversity efforts under attack because of the recent focus on anti-racism. Diversity and inclusion were okay… as long as we did not call out racism. We as a nation are still not willing to address our sordid history with racism, in particular anti-Black racism.
